Jon's Minetest Server

Welcome to the web page for my Minetest server. Odds are that you have found this page by finding the server, but on the off chance that it was the other way around, the server is running at minetest.jlamothe.net on port 30000.

We're Now on the Fediverse!

This server now has a presence on the fediverse. If you have a fedi-compatible social media account (e.g.: Mastodon), you can follow us for important updates at minetest@social.jlamothe.net, or if the fedi isn't your jam, we also have an ATOM feed.

Server Guidelines

Updated: 11 Sep 2023

Given that we've recently had an explosion of new users, and with that a small minority of griefers, I decided that it was time to put together some formal guidelines for the server. I don't want to make this overly heavy-handed so I'll keep it as brief as I can. In the event of a conflict between this website and any other rules posted, the website is to be considered authoritative.

  1. In the immortal words of Wil Wheaton: "don't be a dick!" If you observe this one rule, you probably don't need to worry about the rest, but for the sake of clarity, I'll continue.
  2. I try to keep the initial spawn point stocked with resources that should help to get new players going. Much of it is protected, but much of it is not. Feel free to take from the farms, chop trees, etc. Just be sure to re-plant what you take, and try to leave it in as nice a shape as you found it. Some trees are partially protected and can't be fully chopped down. If you encounter this, just leave it and I will fix it later.
  3. Please be respectful of others. Do not harass others, steal their stuff, or destroy the things they've built. If I see that someone has been doing a lot of work building, I'll typically give them some protection blocks to protect it, but just because something isn't protected doesn't mean it's fair game. Also, please avoid placing protection blocks in areas that prevent people from using the farm (see the next rule for more).
  4. Please be mindful when building not to cut off people's access to public areas, or their own private areas. Also, please do not build structures for the purpose of getting into places that have obviously been made intentionally inaccessible. It's a big map. There are lots of other places to explore.
  5. Bigotry will not be tolerated. You may not discriminate against other users on the basis of:
  6. Discussions or any other content of a sexually explicit** nature are expressly forbidden here. I'm no prude, but there are children who play this game, and I just don't want to open that can of worms. There are plenty of more appropriate forums for that.
  7. "Cheating" is not expressly forbidden, but anything that negatively impacts others' enjoyment of the game is.
  8. Do not attempt to gain unauthorized access to the underlying systems that this game is hosted on. If that's your thing, perhaps check out this site instead.
  9. If you need anything, just ask. I have a variety of contact options listed on my web page, and my name in-game is jlamothe. You can also use the #ModRequest hashtag in chat, and your message will eventually be seen by a moderator. That being said, if you're told no by a moderator, don't keep asking. Requests are granted or denied entirely at moderator discretion. They're not there to cheat for you.
  10. If you make me write a new rule, it's likely going to make me very annoyed, and unlikely to end well for you.
  11. If corrective action has been taken by a moderator, any attempts to circumvent that correction may result in stronger action being taken. If you disagree with any such action, you may send an email to appeals@jlamothe.net to have your case reviewed.

* While you are completely entitled to whatever beliefs you may have, they are just that: your beliefs, and they do not grant you a license to impose them on others.

** General discussions on the topics of gender identity or sexual orientation are not considered to be sexually explicit in and of themselves.
